Nicolai-san's back story is one of the best of this series after Makoto's and Ishida's for me. The fear of not getting accepted into your potential collective is real and in all that effort to become liked by others, there is the danger to lose yourself in the process. Quite the well written back story and best of all it showed once again how great of a character is Makoto - even though he was the most perfect person to be an Eternal Boy, his philanthropic side stroke again by giving to another the light he had and him staying as the supporting role, like with his family.
